Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is now available! Round out your definitive collection today!

GOOD DAY and HAPPY SEPTEMBER, everyone!

This month’s update continues the trend of introducing a smaller (though nonetheless significant) list of tweaks, fixes, and changes to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. While brand-new features and additions are subjected to rigorous testing in preparation for the quarterly update, this month’s release still brings its own list of fixes and features to the game, as well as a new event with exclusive rewards to earn, and even a new challenge scenario for you to show off your skills to your friends!

Here’s the short (tl;dr) list of changes:

  • Unlock new profile icons, mods, and an exclusive cheat code during the Teutons Event!
  • Hold out against waves of enemies in the Barbarossa Brawl challenge scenario!
  • Implemented several pathfinding improvements for Villagers.
  • Gates will no longer permanently lock in the “open” position.
  • Adjustments to the Arabia, Bog Islands, Fortress, Megarandom, Scandinavia, and Socotra maps.

The full, detailed list can be found below: give it a read, experiment with things in the game, and then let us know what you think about the September Update! We’re always perusing our forums for the latest discussions and chatting with you over in the game channels on Discord, so keep all the amazing feedback and inspiration coming our way!

That’s it for this month! We hope you enjoy everything and look forward to seeing you on the battlefield!

Event F.A.Q.

Q: Do I have to complete the challenges on consecutive days?

While challenges don’t have to be completed on consecutive days, only one challenge can be completed per day (after the initial two challenges). This means that you will need to play at least five different days to complete all of the challenges.

Q: When is the last day I can complete the daily challenges?

The Teutons Event concludes October 6.

Q: Do I get to keep all of the event unlocks?

All you need to do is log into your Xbox Live account before the end of the event to keep all of the profile icons and mods you unlock; it’s as easy as that!

Q: What do I do if I accidentally unsubscribe from a special mod?

No problem! All you need to do is click your Profile Icon on the main menu, select Event Mods (under Collection), and then check the unlocked event mod you want to enable!

Q: How do I change my profile icon?

You can update your profile icon in your profile:

  1. On the main menu, click the Profile Icon next to your name.
  2. You should now be in the Profile Icons tab under Collections.
  3. Select your favorite icon, then click the Select Icon button to lock in your choice.
  4. You’re done!

Q: How do I download and enable mods?

NEW! Barbarossa Brawl (Challenge Scenario)

Come, one and all, to test your skills in the BARBAROSSA BRAWL!

  • Build up your defenses and prepare for an intense siege!
  • Defend your Town Center against the enemy onslaught for as long as you can.
  • No walls! You must rely on Towers, Castles and the might of your army.
  • Maximize your score! Every second counts; can you survive for 30 minutes? 1 hour? Longer?

This special holdout scenario challenges you with increasingly more dangerous opponents in an endless siege of your Town Center. The longer you can hold out, the more points you’ll earn towards a spot on the leaderboard of your friends!

While the Barbarossa Brawl replaces the Mongol Raiders scenario, don’t worry; we’re working on a home for all the scenarios and leaderboards in the future!

The Enhanced Logging Build

The stability of the game is of paramount importance, which is why the team has created a new tool to use if you’re experiencing regular crashes and disconnects in your games. The “Enhanced Logging Build” is a Steam Beta branch of the game that can be used to generate advanced networking logs while still playing with everyone on the main game branch. While this does come at a cost of your game’s performance, it’s immensely helpful to generate logs if you know you are prone to connection issues.

Before you use the Enhanced Logging Build...

  • DUE TO THE ENHANCED LOGGING PROCESS, THERE IS AN EXPECTED PERFORMANCE HIT. This is not a bug; it is a result of the logging occurring behind-the-scenes.
  • SWAP BACK TO THE MAIN GAME BRANCH WHEN YOU’RE DONE GENERATING LOGS. This will allow you to play normally and enjoy everything the game has to offer!

Here’s how you can help!

Accessing the Logging Build...

Here’s how to access the special branch:

  1. Launch Steam.
  2. Right click Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition in your library and select Properties…
  3. Select the BETAS tab.
  4. Enter the following beta access code: 4YH2SkfG7CK5yanvrXE9qj8b
  5. Click CHECK CODE
  6. To utilize the build, select the enhanced_logging branch from the drop-down list. Your game will download a very small update (~35 MB).

Note that the beta access code will be changed periodically to reset the branch or add additional logging to identify networking issues.

What to Report

Once you (or another user) experiences a disconnect, you will want to close out of the game at your earliest convenience and find the logs generated while you were playing. They can usually be found here:

  • File Location: C:\Users\LOCALUSER\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\logs
  • (Note that the LOCALUSER part of the path is replaced by your specific user account. If you changed the default installation directory of your Steam client, the logs folder may also be created in a different location.)

You will want to obtain the log file associated with the session where you experienced the connectivity problem. If you closed your game, this is typically the last session, as denoted by the date and time of the log in the folder:

  • Log Example: 2020.09.02-15.08.09.txt
  • The first set of numbers is the date (2020.09.02 = YYYY.MM.DD = September 2nd, 2020)
  • The second set is the time the file was created (15.08.09 = HH.MM.SS = 3:08pm and 9 seconds)

Logs are saved at the END of a session when the client is terminated, and will usually be the last log file in the folder if you look for it immediately following a disconnect or crash.

Transmitting Logs & Important Information

Once you’ve generated a networking log, please upload it to a trusted file hosting service. Make sure you also list it as public so it can be accessed by the Test team!

You can then share the link to the file on the forum or with our support team, along with any information you can provide about the issue. Here are some questions to consider when writing a report:

  • WHAT TYPE of match were you playing? Was it a team game? 1v1? Ranked queue or custom lobby?
  • WHEN did the disconnect occur? When loading into a ranked game? When matchmaking? During the match?
  • Was it your FIRST match of the day? Was this your first match since launching the client? Your second? Third?
  • WHAT STEPS did you take leading up to the disconnect? Describe what happened leading up to the disconnect. Any information is helpful!
  • …etc.

If you also have a video recording of the incident, please feel free to include it in your report!

As always, we want to send a huge thanks to everyone putting in the time to report, track, and help fix these issues! So here it is: THANK YOU!!! ♥

GAME

Stability & Performance

  • Implemented additional safeguards to defend against unsanctioned cheating.
  • Fixed an issue where queuing for consecutive matches with the same party could result in the loss of connection to multiplayer services.
  • Fixed a rare desync caused when players used “layering mode” in the Scenario Editor before joining a multiplayer game.

GAMEPLAY

General

  • Fixed a rare issue where Gates could be permanently (unintentionally) locked in the “open” position.

MAP BALANCE

General

  • Increased the average distance between Forage Bushes and players’ starting Town Center from to 10 squares.

Maps

  • Arabia: Reduced the number of starting forests to 3 wooded areas per player, and increased their distance from the starting Town Center.
  • Arabia: Added elevated terrain around players’ bases.
  • Arabia: Reduced the size of the oases and the length of cliffs that spawn throughout the map. (Yes, “oases” is the plural of “oasis.”)
  • Bog Islands: Players now start with five extra Fishing Ships on Empire Wars—thus restoring the starting economic population to the standard 27 units.
  • Fortress: Removed unnecessary resource and animal spawns from the Death Match and Infinite Resource match types.
  • Fortress: Now, 7 extra Villagers will appear on all game modes, not just Regicide.
  • Megarandom: Fixed a particular map generation which denied some players of their starting forests
  • Scandinavia: Players now start with a Mill and five extra Villagers next to their deer on Empire Wars—thus restoring the starting economic population to the standard 27 units.
  • Socotra: Removed unnecessary resource spawns from the Infinite Resources match type.
  • Socotra: Starting resources are now generated farther from players’ Town Centers.

AI

Pathfinding

  • Fixed an issue where Villagers could endlessly bounce off each other in certain circumstances.
  • Fixed a rare issue where Villagers could get stuck when navigating to resource drop sites.

LOCALIZATION

  • Fixed several Historical Battles where the incorrect audio lines would play when set to Castilian Spanish.

ONGOING INVESTIGATION

As always, we are continuing to track issues reported by the community for future updates. Here is a brief update from our Production team regarding some of what is still in the works:

  • Team Game Connection Issues: We are well aware of disconnects occurring during Team Games and are aggressively investigating this issue. We also need your help! If you’re experiencing (a) a disconnect during TG gameplay, (b) a disconnect during matchmaking or on the loading screen, or (c) crashing on the matchmakng screen, please read the section above regarding the Enhanced Logging Build and follow the instructions. This will generate advanced logs that you can share to help us better understand why you’re experiencing these problems.

For other known issues, please visit this page to see what’s being tracked!

Please note that this list is subject to change, and should not be considered a comprehensive list of all the known issues we’re tracking. The above is to inform you of the team’s current priorities, which will change as other issues arise or take precedence.

The developers are the best in the world! Thank you, Forgotten and Microsoft. I have a balance request: could you do something to lift up the "prestige" of the Bulgarians in pro games? In Empire wars duo it was the most ignored civilization. Either give them some economy bonus or go full one-trick-pony like the Goths and make them insane in the Imperial age. I'm not suggesting that Konniks should be spammable, just saying... :D

I love the fact that you are getting the feedback and working on the issues or improvement requests. Also, the regular updates, with challenges makes the game stay alive and interesting. Great work.

Wonderful! Thank you so much, I love the Teuton event! Although I don't care for the onager pretzels. The summer event was utter trash, but I am highly excited for the Teuton event! Please can you implement that all the civ specific trophies only appear at the town center of the respective civ? Mongol event trophy only at all the steppe civs Mongols, Tartars , Huns and the Teuton trophy only for the Teuton town centers and so on. And make it possible to achieve the event objectives whilst playing with an exclusively visual mod active?

Yes please remove the time gate between challenges, not all players have the same free time. If not possible, I think a good option would be to allow us to complete the all the challenges in a single day after the 5th day of the event. Win win for all.

Thanks for the update! These regular updates keep the game alive. It contains some very welcome improvements, even though it is a "minor" update. Glad to know the team is still investigating the ongoing stability and disconnect issues in team games. If that, and the inflated team rating system (where everyone becomes 2k after enough games played) would be fixed, it would be perfect.

How about ditching the BS that disbands a party after every game? I can't imagine anyone actually asked for this, nobody I've talked to about it thinks it's anything less than awful.

It would be a more modern take to matchmaking if you could stay with your current party after games.

Thank you for the continued support for this game!
