What is the best way for me to provide feedback to the Age of Empires team?

There are two great ways for you to provide feedback:

  1. On the Age of Empires forums – Our developers frequently review the forums for feedback, suggestions, and bug reports. Find the appropriate forum (and sub-forum) for the game you are referencing, and join or start a discussion! Note, if your feedback is related to a beta you are participating in, you need to post within the exclusive forums for your beta.
  2. Through Insider Surveys – Periodically we may send out user feedback surveys to gather information from sections of the community. These are super important as the information gathered is used to drive changes to games and the Age of Empires Insider Program.

My forum account does not reflect my status as an Age of Empires Insider!

This is a Known Issue with the Age of Empires forums, however there are some troubleshooting steps which may resolve this issue for you:

🛠 Check that you are using the same Microsoft account to sign into the forums as your Age of Empires Insider account. You can confirm this by comparing the gamertag on your Age Insider profile with your username on the Age of Empires forums. They should be the same. If they are not, then you have created two (2) separate accounts and will need to choose which one you would prefer, and re-sign-up with the correct account.

🛠 Fully log-out of the forums from all devices. After you have logged out, delete your browser’s cache and cookies, and then sign in to the forums again. Generally speaking, changes in permissions on the forums occur during next sign-in.

🛠 If you have not done so, you will need to create an account for the forums using the same Microsoft account that you used to sign up as an Age of Empires Insider.

If you sign up on the forums with a different Microsoft account, you may notice irregularities such as your forum permissions and badge flair not aligning with your status as an Age of Empires Insider.

Beta Opportunities

How do I sign-up for beta opportunities?

First you will need to sign up as an Age of Empires Insider. Next, you will need to have a DxDiag uploaded to your Age Insider Profile. If you are interested in beta opportunities on the Steam platform, then you will also need to link your Steam account.

Current and announced upcoming beta opportunities are listed on the Age Insiders page after you have signed-in. Additional information on each beta can generally be found on the Age Insiders forums. We will regularly update both the Age Insiders page and the forums with new information as it becomes available.

Registration status, DxDiag information, and answers to the registration survey are all used to determine the candidates for each beta invitation wave. As we move forward through each beta, we will expand the pool of participants. It is possible to be invited to multiple betas.

What platforms are beta opportunities offered on?

Beta opportunities are currently supported on the Steam and Microsoft Store platforms running on Windows Operating Systems.

To be considered for the Steam platform, you will need to have your Steam account linked to your Age Insider Profile.

Can I opt to only receive invites for a particular platform?

By logging in to your Age Insider Profile, and going to the Beta Preferences section, you can set what types of betas you would like to be invited to. We will take these preferences into consideration when we select candidates for beta invitation waves.

How do I update or upload a DxDiag to my Age Insider Profile?

You can update or upload your DxDiag by signing-in to your Age Insider Profile while on the machine that is associated with the DxDiag you want to upload.

🛠 Directions on how to generate a DxDiag can be found on THIS SUPPORT ARTICLE.

From your Age Insider Profile, under Insider Settings, you should see the DxDiag box. Click the Upload button or Update button to launch the uploading tool for you to upload an XML copy of your DxDiag. The tool will only recognize XML files generated by the DirectX Diagnostic tool; it will not recognize TXT files or files converted into XML format.

NOTE: Having an up-to-date DxDiag on file is important to heighten your chances of being selected for a beta opportunity. If you have upgraded your machine (such as hardware or changing Operating Systems) since last you uploaded a DxDiag, we ask that you consider generating a new DxDiag and uploading it to your profile. Thanks!

How do I connect my Steam account to my Age Insider Profile?

First, sign-in to your Age Insider Profile. Under Insider Settings, you should see the Steam box. Click the Link Steam button to start linking your Steam account. You should be redirected to a Steam sign-in page similar to the below picture. Click the Sign In button to complete your Steam link.

To unlink your Steam account, click the Disconnect button, and confirm the action from the pop-up.

NOTE: If you have Family View enabled on your Steam account, you will not be able to link your Steam account. Please ensure that Family View is disabled if you want to link your Steam account.

My DirectX Diagnostic tool will not save as an XML file!

In rare circumstances certain DirectX Diagnostic tools have been known to be prevented from generating a DxDiag in the XML format.

🛠 Some users have found that generating a DxDiag through a Command Prompt generated the correct file. To try this potential workaround:

    1. Open the start menu and type “cmd” and press ENTER
    2. In the Command Prompt window type the following, without quotation marks: “dxdiag -x dxdiag”
    3. Press ENTER
    4. No messages will appear within the Command Prompt window; this is normal.
    5. Check for a “dxdiag.xml” file by going to your C: drive -> Users -> your user name. An exact file pathway may be different for your machine.

🛠 Additionally, other users have reported disconnecting extra monitors and/or unplugging some USB-connected devices have corrected the performance of DirectX Diagnostic tool.

If the above steps do not correct the issue for you, we suggest reaching out to Microsoft Support for additional troubleshooting with the DirectX Diagnostic tool.

I'm in a beta, how do I report a bug or provide feedback?

As part of your invitation to a beta, you should have been provided a link to a particular section of the Age of Empires forums for reporting bugs and providing feedback. Depending on the exact beta, this could be a closed forum or sub-forum, or a particular thread.

If you are unsure where you should post, please feel free to ask a moderator on the Age of Empires forums, reach out on the #technical-support channel of our Discord, or email AOEInsiderSupport@microsoft.com to ask where you can post about that beta. Remember that most betas are confidential and under NDA, so please get confirmation on where you should post before you actually post.

We may also periodically email out user surveys about your experiences in a beta. These are super important as the information gathered is used to drive changes to the game and the Age of Empires Insider Program at large.

Will I get to keep the game after the beta?

While there are several benefits to being an Age of Empires Insider, a free copy of the game is not currently one of those perks.

I cannot launch my beta in Steam; error reads 'missing executable'!

If you are receiving an error at game launch in Steam that reads “missing executable”, then you are currently not opted-in to the beta in your game properties.

🛠 Please follow Part B of the Steam installation instructions.

We are aware that game updates, Steam updates, and Windows updates can cause your beta options to become unset in Steam. You will need to re-enter your beta password as described above.

An example of this error, however the game name and file pathway will vary between betas:

I cannot find my beta listed in the Xbox Insider Hub!

There are two (2) probable causes for this:

🛠 Please check that you are using the same Microsoft account with the Xbox Insider Hub that you registered as an Age of Empires Insider

    1. You can check this by comparing the gamertag on your Age Insider Profile with the gamertag that appears in the Xbox Insider Hub (just below the main picture). These gamertags should be the same.
    2. If these are not the same, then you are logged into the Xbox Insider Hub with a different Microsoft account from the one that was granted access to the beta.
      1. Please launch the Xbox Console Companion app on your machine.
      2. On the left side of the screen you should see your avatar image; right-click it and select log out.
      3. Next, log in to the Xbox Console Companion using the same Microsoft account that you have associated with your Age Insider Profile.

🛠 If your gamertags match from the above steps, then your local copy of the Xbox Insider Hub may need to refresh its connection to Xbox’s servers. Please try these troubleshooting steps:

    1. Use the Xbox Console Companion app to log out.
    2. Run Windows Updates.
    3. Restart your machine.
    4. Use the Xbox Console Companion to log in.
    5. Launch the Xbox Insider Hub.
    6. Navigate to Insider Content.

If the above steps do not resolve your access issue, please check the appropriate beta section of the Age of Empires forums for additional support. If you do not see a thread about your issue, please start a new topic.

I am having trouble downloading, installing, or launching the beta and my problem is not on the Support pages!

If you do not see your issue covered in the support page, please check the appropriate beta section of the Age of Empires forums for additional support. If you do not see a thread about your issue, please start a new topic. Include details about the issue you are encountering and include screenshots of any error messages you are seeing.

Issues like these can be frustrating or time consuming, and we thank you for taking the time to report the issue and work with us on troubleshooting. Documenting and troubleshooting these issues are highly important to the beta process, and both help to improve the game and help to improve the Support and FAQ pages!

I cannot access a closed beta section of the forums, but I can login to the forums!

This is related to missing permissions on your forums account. Please try these troubleshooting steps in order:

🛠 Make sure you are logged in to the Age of Empires forums, and then re-try any provided links to the closed beta section you are trying to reach.

🛠 Check that you are using the same Microsoft account to sign into the forums as your Age of Empires Insider account. You can confirm this by comparing the gamertag on your Age Insider profile with your username on the Age of Empires forums. They should be the same. If they are not, then you have created two (2) separate accounts and will need to log-out, and create a new Age of Empires forums account with the same Microsoft account as you used to sign-in to your Age Insider Profile.

🛠 Fully log-out of the forums from all devices. After you have logged out, delete your browser’s cache and cookies, and then sign in to the forums again. Generally speaking, changes in permissions on the forums occur during next sign-in.

If the steps above do not resolve your issue, please reach out to AOEInsiderSupport@microsoft.com for assistance. We will need your gamertag and the URL of the forums page you are trying to access; a screenshot of any error messages can also help diagnose any potential alternative problems.

Guidelines & NDA

What is the NDA?

The Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) is a legal agreement between you and the Age of Empires team outlining the conditions of your participation in the Age of Empires Insider Program. It highlights that we will be sharing varying degrees of confidential information with you, and your agreement to keep that confidentiality in-return by not sharing certain information outside of pre-approved communication channels.

All Age of Empires Insiders must agree to and sign the NDA to join the Age of Empires Insider Program.

Below are answers to some common questions about the Guidelines & NDA.

Can I tell people that I am in the playtest?

Yes, you can certainly tell people that you are participating in the playtest, and you can encourage them to sign-up for the playtest as well! However, you cannot show them the game or discuss NDA-covered topics with them. This includes, but is not limited to: bugs, feedback, gameplay elements, or game content. These types of information are reserved for our closed forums. Please review the full NDA & Guidelines.

Do I need to adjust my friends setting in Steam so people can’t see what I’m playing?

No. Steam will display that you are Online but will not display you as in a game while you are playing the beta. The beta will appear on your Recently Played games list, and that is fine. See Can I tell people that I am in the playtest?

Can I stream a let’s-play of the beta?

No. This is expressly prohibited by the NDA & Guidelines.

Can I answer questions if someone else is asking about the playtest on another forum?

No. Questions like that are attempting to goad you into breaking your NDA; don’t fall for it. If you would like to be helpful, you can remind them, and others, that their question is protected by the NDA & Guidelines, and direct them to the appropriate beta forum.

Someone is having trouble getting into the beta forums to report an issue, what can I do to be helpful?

Discussion of their issue outside of the closed forums would be a violation of the NDA & Guidelines. Please direct them to email AOEInsiderSupport@microsoft.com with their gamertag and Xbox Live email address so we can troubleshoot with them and get them into the forums. As we need sensitive pieces of information to do this efficiently, we cannot troubleshoot forum access on a public board. Thanks for assisting!

The AoE team responded to my post with a reminder of the NDA; am I in trouble?

Heed any warnings provided to you by our staff. Ignoring the warning, violating the spirit of the NDA & Guidelines, or blatant disregard for it will result in our team taking action.

I found someone posting information/pictures/video of the playtest; what do I do?

Please send an email to AOEenforcement@microsoft.com with the URL of the leak. We will take it from there. Thanks!

Why does the Age Insider Team take the NDA & Guidelines so seriously?

At its highest level, the Age Insider NDA & Guidelines allow us to share information with you: our loyal fans and community. We want to involve you in the beta process, hear your feedback, and work together on an awesome game! That involvement requires mutual trust and respect.

Your invitation to participate in the beta is our acknowledgement that we trust you with confidential information about an unfinished product, and that we value your feedback and contribution to the game and the community as a whole. Leaking this information, or discussing aspects of features, gameplay, or experiences in the beta, makes it harder for us to share information and get feedback in the future.

Violations take time away from our team for processing, hamper our ability to invite more participants into the beta, and in some instances, show that the individual does not value the other participants in the beta program nor the Age community at large.

We love this community and these games; we want to continue sharing them with you and cooperating on their improvement. These are the fundamental reasons why our team takes the Age Insider NDA & Guidelines seriously.

I was removed from the Age Insider Program for violating the NDA; can I appeal this decision?

Yes. You can email AOEenforcement@microsoft.com and make your case for being reinstated into the Age Insider Program. To maintain the integrity of the appeals process, each case will be reviewed as unique to its own circumstances (no precedent). If your appeal is approved for reconsideration, then you will receive a response
