Posting in case others have the sound issue.
I'm on Windows 10 home 1903 build 18362.592, and have AOE DE from the MS Store. I upgraded to AOE 34483 today, and lost most sound (intro videos have audio, game itself and menus have no sound effects or music).
I was sceptical it would do anything, but I fetched directx_Jun2010_redist.exe from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=8109 , extracted it, ran DXSETUP, and sound came back the next time I launched AOE DE.
Before running this, I had checked in-game settings for sound volume (was on already on max, moving the bar did not cause sound to kick in or anything). The volume mixer (from the task bar) showed silent output for the app, and the sound control panel (from sound settings, from the task bar) showed all other audio devices were silent.
Can anyone explain how comes that installing DirectX 9 package on Windows 10 helps to bring back sound effects? How it is possible when the package is for older systems? Anyway, installing it removes the problem. I confirm this! Kind of magic or what? Microsoft, thank you very much for being helpful, as usual. This is really encouraging for customers paying money.
Your welcome. For next time: Sometimes google is your friend. ☺
Excellent info. Thanks both.
It gave me the courage to use the link given by Joonas Top at https://forums.ageofempires.com/t/fix-to-sound-problem-34483/67253.
Despite the file going back to 2011, I can confirm it worked perfectly on my Windows 10 Pro, version 1909, PC.
It fixes AoE sound problem, corrects sound slider errors, and leaves dxdiag showing DirectX 12 as previously with no attendant problems.
I downloaded the directX here: https://www.microsoft.com/de-de/download/details.aspx?id=35&751be11f-ede8-5a0c-058c-2ee190a24fa6=True
Several folk here keep stating here that 'reinstalling DirectX' fixed the missing sound problem introduced by this destructive update. They all refer to a DirectX 9 installation file from 2011, BUT Windows 10 uses DirectX 12, and this is built into Windows 10, so there is no way to reinstall it. I have asked around here for more clarification but received nothing helpful, so I can only assume these users were running an antiquated Windows version like 7 or Vista.
Meanwhile AoE, totally muted as it now is after update 34483, continues to remain UNPLAYABLE for Windows 10 users after two whole weeks. And still no word from Microsoft about when they're going to fix this. Totally unacceptable.
To my knowledge AoE Def. Ed. runs only on Windows 10. I downloadet the directX here: https://www.microsoft.com/de-de/download/details.aspx?id=35&751be11f-ede8-5a0c-058c-2ee190a24fa6=True
"Implemented several performance optimizations for lower-end systems." - seems like the problem was in the sound. :-)
Anybody home? It's not a shame to take part in the discussion. There's no sound in AoE DE (34483). What are you going to do about it?
We have the discussion for weeks...
I reinstalled the newest Version of directX and the sound problem was solved.
There is no updates for me at Microsoft Store! so I can't download any updates through the Microsoft Store.
My game vir. is 27374!
That's the original version of AoE which Microsoft no longer updates. The new version has to be downloaded separately from the Microsoft Store and can be run concurrently with the old. But frankly I wouldn't bother at present, as the new version is plagued with problems - the latest (update 34483) being the complete absence of sound within the game.
*ver.
I reinstalled the newest Version of directX and the spund problem was solved.
Can you run dxdiag from the Start menu, and tell me what DirectX version number is indicated at the bottom of its System tab. The latest version is DirectX 12, but the version you would have 'reinstalled' is DirectX 9, the .exe installation program being 9 years old and created for Windows 7 and below. Did you run that on a Windows 10 computer?
@timotheospetros, I dont know actuel number of direct x. But it was the first ad in Google.
Are you Windows 10 and Directx 12? I ask because I know of no DirectX reinstallation technique for DirectX 12. Perhaps you can explain more.

Please add AI selection, as in AoE 2 DE. Personally, I prefer the original AI of RoR '98. or the one used in Upatch.
This update affect the sound, please fix this as soon possible, it's true there are less crashes but without sound simply WE CAN'T PLAY. Thank you in advance.
We've been investigating what is causing sound issues for some players. In the meantime, many players have found that reinstalling DirectX helps.
