Stability & Performance

  • Fixed an issue with screen space calculations that led to the game looking blurry in certain cases.
  • Fixed a crash that could happen late in the shutdown process.
  • Fixed a potential crash that could occur on game startup in certain, limited circumstances.
  • Made an adjustment to the Bar files, which should allow game updates to be downloaded and installed more quickly following this hotfix.

  • Corrected an issue which would cause grey boxes to display on the Historical Battles and Home City Customization menu screens.

  • Fixed an issue where the Enable Friend/Foe Outlines and Enable Pattern Overlay accessibility options would not enable after being selected and applied in the options screen.
  • Fixed several narration and accessibility issues.

  • Disabled the use of cheat codes in the Bombard Brawl challenge scenario.

As always, we are continuing to track issues reported by the community for future updates. Here is a brief update from our Production team regarding some of what is still in the works:

  • Stuck Units: We believe we have fixes for most of the root problems causing this issue. Once they’ve been tested and included in a build, the most valuable thing you can provide if you encounter it again is 1) a replay file that shows the units getting stuck, 2) the name of the map, and 3) detailed steps of what commands were issued or steps resulted in the unit(s) getting stuck. Create a new thread on the official forum and we’ll do what we can to investigate and implement a fix!
  • Attack-Move Optimization and Fixes: A prevalent topic of discussion, the team is continuing their investigation and looking into solutions to ensure that it performs as expected in all circumstances. More updates to come!
  • Crashes: As always, the stability of the game continues to be a primary focus of our efforts. If you are experiencing crashes, disconnects, drops, performance problems, or other technical issues which affect your experience, please contact our support team so they can help you and collect information for our team.
  • Low-end PC Performance: We’ve been focused on improving the performance of the game when running on older hardware, and believe that the game will run much more smoothly after the next update.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: As we continue to lock down the most critical issues, we’re continuing to work on quality of life improvements to the game, mod support, and other areas in need of some love. We’re excited to share everything we have in the works, so stick around!

For other known issues and updates, please visit this page to see what’s being tracked!

Please note that this list is subject to change, and should not be considered a comprehensive list of all the known issues we’re tracking. The above is to inform you of the team’s current priorities, which will change as other issues arise or take precedence.

What's on the Horizon

Next month’s update is a maintenance patch, which means that it will be both smaller than a regular release and will not introduce a new event and challenges for you to tackle. What it will introduce is some quality of life features that we think you’ll enjoy. Here’s a small taste of what’s on the horizon:

  • Resources per Minute: On top of your total resources, you will be able to see your resource gain per minute, giving you greater control over your economy.
  • Flags of Civilizations in the Score panel: A long-standing ask since the game’s release, we’re excited to introduce this to Age III: DE.
  • Display the Attack Radius of Units: When units are selected, holding ALT will display the attack radius of the selected units.
  • Toggle your Preferences: New settings options will let you toggle most of the new behaviors to prevent them from disrupting your game or introducing scary new changes. The power is yours!

It was all fine for me untill this patch came out. Now I usually end up getting randomly crashed in the middle of 40 min treaty games. Not even once, it is happening so often. I even rebooted my windows because of this.

Please improve compatibility with Windows 7, me and thousands of loyal AoE fans beg for it.
    • soullessheathen March 3, 2021
Windows 7 is no longer a current or supported OS. You may as well ask for Windows 95 support.

All these improvements give me hope that the multi-player interface will be improved one day. I miss being able to see if my friends were online. I much preferred the ranking in age 3 legacy. Overall love DE though

It's fantastic to see these new QoL features. Thank you!!!
  • bullet-2 February 26, 2021
You guys hit the nails on the head. I've been wanting some of these features as a new player and that's exciting to see them already being implemented!

Thank you for all your work on the game! :) If we can ask for even more... I believe making the unit types and counter system more simple/transparent would be a great benefit to newer players! I.e. making the icons more distinguishable, make it easier to read what type of unit you have currently selected and remove the overlapping tags (infantry and cavalry, just give heavy cavalry their own icon). :)

Showing resources per minute and attack radius will be great improvements! Very exciting!
  • moresquirrel126 February 26, 2021
I'm definitely looking forward to those QoL upgrades! Resources per Minute especially will be really useful, and attack radius is a nice addition too. Also glad to see the return of civilization flags in the score panel.

One feature I'd love is the taskbar flashing when a match is found, like in AOE2DE. So I can alt-tab and do other things while waiting for a match.

I'd be very appreciative of the Classic UI being the actual Classic UI, instead of only a Partial. Also the game seems extremely small to me and changing the resolution does nothing, unlike with the original Age where seeing units wasn't very difficult for me on the default setting, I've no idea if this is merely because of the change of unit's overall color schemes or the fact that the game itself seems to have gone even farther back in camera angle. If either of these two things could be addressed, especially the second, I would be very appreciative. Until then I'm sorry to say I'll have to stay on the Classic Version, which is a shame since it's not particularly well-balanced.

I'm unable to launch any online games (multiplayer or vs AI) after this update. This was an existing sporadic issue that now happens 100% of the attempts.

Please ensure you reach out to our Support team, as they will be able to work with you to dig into (and hopefully solve) the issue:

unable to launch aoe 3 or aoe 2. it won't download the update
  • wiryscissors465 February 25, 2021
With the upcoming patch, I'm excited to see that the developers have realized what they need a little more about the game. Praise the developers for their hard work. One thing I would like to suggest is that AOE3's economy is critical to optimizing the resources generated per second and reducing the utmost inefficient behavior of settlers. Therefore, I think it would be better to show the resource increase per second rather than the resource increase per minute. Anyway, next month's patch made me look forward to it for the first time in playing AOE3DE. I hope to see a lot of these notices in the future.
  • harveyshideout February 25, 2021
I was cynical on launch but I was so wrong, they devs have really pulled through and this game is an excellent improvement, I hope it gets the attention it deserves.
  • mkaras92 February 25, 2021
I'm so happy for the upcoming changes! Resource/min, flags and attack radius will be very welcomed. I'm just a little worried about readability of resource/min but will see in March :)
  • godfallout15 February 25, 2021
Hi, thank you for the update. There is an issue when I play with some friends in nomad in a few maps like Malasia where it begins without the explorer, the Covered Wagon or even both are missing. Please check that since it has been making impossible play in some maps.
  • mechanicbark354 February 25, 2021
Please work on DLC for Age III : DE
  • stubs24 February 25, 2021
I would seriously love WASD support for camera movement. It kills me that other AOE DE games have this, but not 3. Glad to see updates for this nonetheless!
    • gamer4life20143 February 25, 2021
you technically can just enable conflicts, although if you don't wanna rewire it all then you can do it so it does 2 things when pressed, like w for me goes up but also tp and market for european civs

  • degrail712 February 25, 2021
Great upcoming QOL UI changes! Please consider adding unit train time (in seconds) to the unit stat UI and when hovering over a unit in the building panel.
  • mal7887 February 25, 2021
Appreciate the work that went into this update!
  • sagetbh February 25, 2021
Thanks for the amazing work <3
  • dan-22 February 25, 2021
Thank you for the update! We appreciatte it very much. Any chance of an upcoming patch to improve the viability of minor natives? They are forgotten since TAD back in 2007...it's been almost 15 years being side casted.
    • bardackx-2 February 25, 2021
What about being able to train a limited amount of villagers from all minor natives similar to crees CB?
