Chamille: Hello everyone! We’re back with another Community Highlight for the month of August. Last episode, we visited the talented folks of the community who have trained diligently in their craft to create exciting and beautiful fan art. Today, we wanted to put emphasis on all of you as a whole for playing the game that all brought us together today: Age of Empires! We requested you submit your (or others) best gameplay clips via our social channels. Maybe you finally pulled off that wall technique and trapped the enemy army, or perhaps did some spectacular micro to save your troops from an incoming onager shot. The response we got was definitely… well, it was something else! All though we said BEST PLAYS… let’s be real, they definitely were above and beyond just that! From beginners to experts to everything in between, we are extremely excited to present to you these gameplay highlights!
What better ways to talk about gameplay than with everyone’s favorite barbecue loving Australian? Turk has been a massive pillar in the Age community for years; running, playing, and casting tournaments, providing memes, debating and discussing hot topics, and now he works at Forgotten Empires as their Community Manager! NovaAOE - Low Elo? Where?
Turk: Quick walling is always a hotly debated topic within our community; there are those that love it or completely despise it. The ability to stop a melee army in its tracks and even delay a ranged force is extremely valuable, but a hard skill to master! The skill level of the player base has increased tenfold over the most recent year and quick walling, a strategy widely used by the top of the player base, has become a skill many are mastering on the ranked ladder. NovaAOE captured this perfect moment during the Open Elo Cup series. Being ‘low elo’ doesn’t mean you don’t have some rad skills to flaunt when the stars align!
Maggy205 - 5HP Is All You Need
Turk: Every Age of Empires player knows that nail biting moment when you commit to a fight you’re not 100% sure you’ll win. Maggy shows her excellent skill here by disengaging her opponent’s Scout, knowing they have the upper hand after it lands the first blow. She then lures her opponent to the opposite hillside nearby, claiming the attack and defense bonus; swaying the odds in her favor. It’s tight, but her quick thinking and game knowledge earns her a victory in this tricky situation!
mblaoc - Insanity
Turk: MBL is well known for his phenomenal level of play and ability to stress out the entire chat with a few bursts of shouting. In this clip, he demonstrates some exceptional micromanagement that even he can’t believe he’s pulling off! He manages to save ALL of his Arbalest against his opponents multi pronged attack by weaving them while moving his own Onagers into position to get the snipes he needs. As an added bonus, he also managed to save both Trebuchets from the Onager assault, giving him the perfect opportunity to control the battlefield and pacing against the remaining Skirmishers.
RolHistorias - Explosions!
Turk: The Demolition Ship is one of my favorite units in Age of Empires— a sneaky Demolition Ship, however, is easily at the top. Dynsai (@RolHistorias) shows why you should always be wary crossing shallow water, especially when there’s a Dock with a garrison flag. Getting that close to the Dock sealed the fate of those poor Crossbowman. Always remember, one good Demolition Ship can change the course of the game. Be careful out there!
SpringTV & DaveAOE - Hey, Guy
Turk: This may be my favorite clip of the month! Though Dave didn’t achieve much by out-microing Spring in this particular engagement— sometimes it’s not about the result, it’s about the reaction and the friends we make along the way!
Nili_AOE - 30 Kills In 1.4 Sec!
Turk: Cousin to the sneaky Demolition Ship we saw earlier by Dynsai, is the sneaky Siege Onager! Nili has loaded his Siege Workshops with Siege Onagers, ready for his opponents Longbow push. It only took one shot to drastically halt the push before it could even begin. As Nili himself would say, “Siege Onager goes brrrrr”.
TaToH & Daut - Vrrrrrrr
Turk: TaToH and DauT in the ultimate showdown, the race of the Siege Towers. Nothing says confidence like setting up a race during a 2v2 match. But, big questions need big answers, and that wasn’t about to hold back our two Mythbusters. Is a Mongol or Teuton Siege Tower faster? It may have cost TaToH a few Mangudai in the process, and DauT’s may have ruined the tests controlled environment with his impressive micro skills. But, moments like this is what Age of Empires is all about!
TheViper - A Hard Place
Turk: Queue TheViper’s clown horn clip. In this heated moment, TheViper manages to trap a HUGE amount of ACCM’s Eagle Warriors between his Stone Wall and Castle. Not only does he prevent any economic damage, but he manages to wipe out ACCM’s entire army for free! There’s quick walling, and then there’s this. It’s a whole different level from TheViper in this clip. Oh yeah, he had Ballista Elephants too, line ’em up!
JonSlow_ - Triple Boar Lure?
Turk: JonSlow, host of the fantastic Clown Cup 3 shows how dire it can be when a single enemy Scout shows up with impeccable timing. The dream of 1,000 free bonus Food quickly turns into a nightmare as he loses three Villagers to a single Scout and a crocodile. Never forget the damage that can be done with your starting Scout, given opportunity. JonSlow may have flown a little to close to the sun with this one… As a public service announcement, please remember to wall on Black Forest.
